Spring has sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where the Beulkes is? Yes! This is the best time of year. Grass is getting green and the buds are popping out on the trees. And of course, my little ditty at the beginning of this article reminds us that Beulkes and Flowers go hand in hand!
In Wanamingo, located at 680 3rd Avenue as you enter town, you will see the greenhouses standing proudly, filled with this year's goodies. Oh what a joy it was to take a sneak peak with Jim and Susie as I interviewed them as to the upcoming season.
They informed me that this year is going to offer all that they have had in the past 32 or so years since they began this adventure, plus a bit more. Since they are known for their Coleus plants, you will be able to choose from the wide variety they have always grown. There's even one distinct Coleus called a Skeleton. It is amazing! Along with the annuals they carry, they have added more to the perennial selection, and will have a larger selection and quantity of vegetable starts for you home gardeners out there. You will be able to choose from premade Patio Pots, or purchase your own selection to make one yourself..
The planting season kicks off this weekend on Friday, April 24th with a soft opening for all of us who are patiently waiting to get our hands dirty. As in the past few years, the opening celebration will be Mother's Day weekend on May 10th. There will be refreshments and door prizes, and the first 100 Moms to arrive will get a pretty special gift to help in their gardening endeavors! You will find an assortment of hanging baskets at a wide variety of prices, so everyone can afford to spruce up their yard. As you know if you have been a patron in previous seasons, these flowers, started from seeds and cuttings by the Beulkes go fast, so if there are particular flowers or colors you are focusing on this year, come early so you can get what you want!
If you are new to the greenhouse, there is more to it than just selling plants. Affectionately called The Florist and The Farmer, you will find Susie and Jim hard at work in and about the plants. They have help from their kids, Jack and Ellyn, and a few local ladies to help with the retail sales, but there's more to it than that! Susie makes beautiful wedding bouquets and flowers to make a wedding shine, and also provides flower arrangements for proms and funerals. They do urns for the gravesides of your beloved, too. If you need vases and centerpieces for your wedding, look no further than their rental section inside. And in the past 2 years, they have offered the freshest produce you will find in their self serve area in the front of the store. There is a money box for convenient payment of cash and checks, and even a Venmo option. This, of course, will be a ways off, as the veggies still have to grow! "The customers love the fresh produce", says Jim. "We appreciate the support from our local friends and neighbors, and weather permitting, we will do it again this year!"
Kenyon/Wanamingo prom is coming up on May 2nd, and Zumbrota's prom is May 25th, so be sure to get your orders in on time for those special events, too. For special orders anytime, for all occasions, give them a call at (507)272-3764 to place your order. You will receive quality flowers and personalised service. I promise!
