Recently I have been diving deeper into the Old Testament, and I have become more aware of both the prophetic verses that have come to pass and ones that have not yet manifested in regard to Jesus Christ. What do I mean by prophetic verses? Good question. In a nutshell, these would be Scriptures that talk on a future event that will take place.
Below you will see I have shared a few of these prophetic verses that have been achieved and ones that have not yet occurred. I hope this article ignites something in your spirit to take time to read the Old Testament. When you open your Bible, my desire for you is that you will see history come alive. (Verses are taken from the New King James Version unless otherwise indicated.)
Fulfilled Prophecies
Isaiah 7:14 is referring to Jesus being born of a Virgin (Mary), and His name will be called Immanuel (God with us).
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. (Fulfilled in Matthew 1:23)
Isaiah 53:5 speaks about what would happen to Jesus in His first coming (John 3:16–17) and the horrible beating he would take for both you and me.
But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. (Fulfilled in 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 2:9; Colossians 1:20; 1 Peter 2:24)
Zechariah 9:9 discusses Jesus humbly arriving in Jerusalem on a donkey as our Lord and Savior.
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. (Fulfilled in Matthew 21:5–11; John 12:15)
Zechariah 11:12 shares about someone who will betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. Unfortunately, that person was Judas Iscariot.
Then I said to them, “If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain.” So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.” (Fulfilled in Matthew 26:15 and 27:3)
Still Not Fulfilled
Psalm 96:13b shares that Jesus is indeed coming back and will judge the earth.
For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, And the peoples with His truth.
Daniel 7:13–14, from my perspective, discusses how Jesus will be ushered to the heavenly Father by angels. Jesus will have everlasting dominion and rule on this earth as He will reign for one thousand years (see Revelation 20:4–6). Jesus’s rule is not limited to the millennial reign; He will reign for eternity. However, there is a designated time period in Scripture (one thousand years) for various things to be accomplished and fulfilled.
I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, Which shall not pass away, And His kingdom the one Which shall not be destroyed.
Zechariah 12:9 is a very sobering Scripture that shares on the wrath that will come against all the nations who are against Jerusalem (Israel).
It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
Zechariah 14:16 declares that when Jesus returns, nations that came against Jerusalem will come to worship Jesus in actual Jerusalem (see verse 17). From my perspective, Jerusalem will be the most favored, holy, and anointed city in the whole world (see Zechariah 8:3).
And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles.
I highly encourage you to look up these verses and go on a scavenger hunt to discover more prophetic verses in the Old Testament. I would like to close with 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
